Why should the fandom care? With all the outrage over Livejournal strikeouts and censorship, it seems to me we all care about the freedom of information and the freedom of personal expression. For those living in the US, our online identities are predicated on the 1st Amendment of the Constitution. Ron Paul has stated that regulation of content on the Internet is “a very, very dangerous precedent to set.” 

I know that among other things, Ron Paul will protect and defend my right to free speech.

So after what feels like ages, I'm finally updating again! This is exciting and also feels kinda weird.

( Better late than never! )

Here we go... after spending four hours in the queue, I got my copy, put in my iPod (it was a good thing, as drunken Muggles on the 14 bus were shouting out spoilers from the back of the book!) and went home.  Finished on Saturday at some point...

And my reaction...

It's not ending at midnight on July 21.

I mean that.  I've never known such a tenacious bunch as the Harry Potter fandom, and I don't think we'll let the small detail of 'closure/ending/conclusion of the series' interfere with our speculation, our loyalties, and our fanfiction.  It will take years to analyse the meanings behind Rowling's masterpiece series.  Book 7 will spawn hordes of wonderful plot bunnies.  The Alternate Universe genre will take on a life of its own.  If JKR continues her style to the last, she will raise as many possibilities as she answers.  Who knows?  I would consider myself a satisfied reader if she left even a little bit of ambiguity, something for us to ponder forever.

I am reminding myself of this because I don't want to mourn this book release, and I don't want this fun, this fascination, to die.  I have every intention of staying in this fandom and celebrating what JKR has created... and run with glee along spin-off stories and fanfiction.  To look at an example of a fandom very much alive after the 'end', there's Lord of the Rings.  We know what happens to the hero, Frodo... it's the world we love, the endless possibilities, the backstories and the minor characters who can be fleshed out in their own ways by talented fans.

We've raised a tremendous amount of energy with our dedication to the Potterverse.  The entire world, from Australia to China to Europe to the Americas, is waiting to hear the word on Harry.  I, for one, feel incredibly grateful to be a part of such an amazing phenomenon.

I'm going off Livejournal until I've finished the book, then we can all gather and chatter and despair and exalt (under spoiler cuts, of course!)  Until that magic moment - I'll be at the massive launch party at Piccadilly, London - where I crack open my brand new copy, I'm keeping my iPod earphones in.

Win or lose, agree or disagree with whatever the ending may be... this is going to be huge, guys.

Oh, the mental picture...

Well, all of you who are reading The Right Hand Path (my Merope-survives AU fic)... I regret to say that it's going on hiatus for the time being.  I know I've said I would never do this, but it really is unavoidable on this one.

This is not because I am tired of it, or because I've run out of ideas, but because I simply have zero time to work on it.  I have the entire story outlined and I know exactly what happens to Merope, to Tom Jr., and all the rest, but I will not do the plot justice right now.  I promise I will finish it at some point in the future, but only when I can properly dedicate myself and my time.

So for now, thank you all who've read up to this point, and check back sometime later this year - oh goodness, the poor Dark Lord will already be defeated by the time I post a new chapter - it's good that he has an alternate universe with a mother who loves him. 

Well. I've been completely awol from Livejournal this week and I feel out of the loop, so I reckon it's time I posted something... Moving house was a big deal and now I'm all settled in, but my work life keeps interfering. Bleh.

However, this morning I was perusing Mugglenet, which I hardly ever do because I think they're pretentious and Harry-centric and totally unsupportive of the dark side (I mean really, who do they think they are??) but I came across an essay that grabbed my attention: it outlines the reasons why dear old Professor McGonagall might not be so trustworthy. It's well written and it echoes some tiny half-formed thoughts of my own that I had when I read the series. So, hop to it and read: 'Who but McGonagall?'  I think it's a little on the farfetched side of things, but JKR might do it, and my fangirl heart would just leap for joy if she did. 

As for me... *runs off to read some Tom/Minerva fic*
